I have just returned from taking 52 Year 8 kids to see Stormbreaker. I have been teaching the book for about 4 years and have always found it hugely successful with boys AND girls. Great story with lots of great language and style points to teach.
The kids loved the film - THE FILM WAS GREAT!! Without being too sexist, the gasp of delight from the girls when they saw Alex Pettyfer was worth the hours of preparation alone. High energy, fast pace, great acting - especially from Alex Pettyfer. Missi Pyle a delight, Mickey Rourke delightfully over the top, Robbie Coltrane's PM spoof was naughty but nice, Damien Lewis as cold as ice. They loved, especially, the bike chase across London, the car crusher scene and final scene atop Sayle's tower block.

The kids' other verdict was that - THE BOOK WAS BETTER!! They missed, especially, the quad bike chase and the long subterranean passage. 'Not enough Mr Grin.' 'What happened to Mr Grin?' 'There should have been more with Wolf.'
That's their verdict, and I'm sure they will all be entering the contest to be in the next movie.
Please keep the books coming, I enjoy reading them for myself and to keep the kids up-dated with Alex's adventures as they progress from Year 8 to Sixth Form.

My view - go for a 12A certificate next time. You won't lose any audience and you will be able to make the films as gritty as the books.

i agree.

what i've found interesting is that all the reviews (or most) criticise the film because there is no swearing and the actor is too good looking.....

pretty un-solid reasons if you ask me.

though i do hope that pb will be rated PG-13 (12A) next time. and i hope there is a next time. XD

The thing that bugs me the most is the way they compare SB to James Bond and HP, SK and ACB!!

I mean, I guess it's ok to compare a little bit, but you cant say it's bad just because it's in the same genre with all the movies above, or is way too similar (BUT IT'S NOT!) etc etc...

It gets on my nerve, those mean reviewers.. evil

My friend really enjoyed it even though it seemed a little kiddy-ish, which is why i would agree with changing uit to 12a.
